117. THIS COUNTRY…

PJ Harvey recently released a fantastic new album called ‘Let England Shake’ – a politically charged album featuring songs about her relationship with and views of her native country, England.

In interviews leading up to the release of the album, PJ explains how the album was inspired by her observations about people’s love/hate relationships with their country of birth. She explores the voice of patriotism vs the voice of rebellion and the spirited passion that can burn and eat into one’s soul when talking about the political situation of one’s own country.

This gave me insight into my own relations with my own birth country and adopted country and how I too have an intense love/hate thing with it.

It’s inspired me to write lyrics for a song called “This Country”. Enjoy!

‘This Country’ by Persis Shanker

Verse 1:

years ago i wanted your hands off my neck

when you desired to keep me in check

i wasn’t fully grown, i was just told n told

i was to obey till i was tired n old.

Chorus:

the windows opened

a new scene – a new world

i choked, gasping strange air

for strength to break ole familiar chains

i bolted, never looking back

this country – i could’ve loved….

Verse 2:

years ago, freedom stood still

when you froze our souls for the kill

but fire burns through the cold

through the ages, wild and bold

Chorus:

the windows then opened

a new outside – a new world

i choked, gasping strange air

for strength to break ole familiar chains

i bolted, never looking back

this country – i could’ve loved…

About thejellyfarm

In real life, I am a television writer and producer...er no...scratch...a television director....noo, scratch....a media loser.....wait, that doesn't sound quite insulting enough....... OK, ahem. In real life, I'm an idiot box expert with a penchant for the creative. In short, I'm a loser with no focus or direction in life. I just go where the creative flow takes me. Mostly it takes me to clogged up drains and stinky oceans but it's going.......going.....somewhere. And this blog is an expression of that mindblowing roadblock. Creative frustration is a great motivator and here is a result of that.
